In ancient time Jaipur region came under the Matsya Kingdom. The king consulted several books on architecture and architects before making the layout of Jaipur. Finally, under the guidance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya (chief architect of the king) Jaipur came into existence on the classical principles of Vastu Shastra and the similar classical treatises.

The construction of the city started in 1727, it took around 4 years to complete the major places, roads and square. The city was divided into nine blocks, of which two contain the state buildings and palaces, with the remaining seven allotted to the public. Huge fortification walls were built, along with seven strong gates.
For the time architecture of the town was very advanced, and certainly the best in the Indian subcontinent.

SHAKING MINARETS

Ahmadabad is a city of historic monument. While visiting this beautiful monument the history comes alive in front of my eyes. One such famous monument is Jhulta Minar which means in English Swinging or shaking Minarets. As the name suggest this minaret is actually swaying.

Jhulta minar is located in Ahmadabad city of Gujarat, India. The mosque was built by Sidi Bashir, a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah. It is in front of the Ahmadabad railway station.

It is a mysterious design and couldn't be understood by any modern architect till today. Jhulta Minar is a part of famous mosque Siddi Bashri in Ahmadabad. The minarets are 3 storeys tall and connected at one point. The vibration from one minaret can be felt in the other minaret but the connecting portion doesn't vibrate at all. The unusual construction of this structure is still a mystery for modern science.

WORLD'S LARGEST SUNDIAL

JANTAR MANTAR
In the heart of the pink city Jaipur, India, there exist a century old observatory used for numbering the stars and counting the minutes.

Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Maharaja (king) Jai Singh II at Jaipur city of Rajasthan, India. It was built between 1727 to 1734. It has been inscribed on the World Heritage list.
The name Jantar means instrument and Mantar means calculation, therefore Jantar Mantar means 'calculation instrument'.

There are in all 14 geometric device in Jantar Mantar for the study of time, dates, stars, space and Indian Jyotish Shastra ( Astrology).  Though these instruments are not used now, but still proves to be important for astronomical science.
Samrat Yantra in Jantar Mantar holds the record for worlds largest sundial, its 27 meters tall.

Samrat Yantra's shadow carefully plotted to tell the time of day. Its face is angled at 27 degrees, the latitude of Jaipur. The Hindu Chhatri (small cupola) on top is used as a platform for announcing eclipses and the arrival of monsoons. Its shadow moves visible at 1 mm per second, or roughly a hand's breadth (6 cm) every minute, which can be a profound experience.

Today the observatory is a popular tourist attraction. However, local astronomers still use it to predict the weather for farmers.
